CFUW Sudbury Makes Submission to Select Committee on Sexual Violence and Harassment
April 21, 2015 - CFUW Sudbury made a submission to the Ontario government Select Committee on Sexual Violence and Harassment. The Select Committee met in Sudbury on April 8, 2015.
The submission focussed on the hypersexualization of children, particularly girls. "This is the process of inappropriately imposing sexuality on children, through media, marketing, products or other means, which encourages them to act in adult sexual ways."

A National Child Care Campaign
Child care has long been an issue of concern for CFUW. Since 1972 we have been advocating for further investment, further structure and support for a national child care system.
This is an issue for CFUW because when women shoulder unpaid childcare work, as they most often do, they sacrifice full participation in the labour force, resulting in poverty and a widening wage gap. Canada needs an affordable, accessible child care system.
The Liberal Government has allocated $500 million in this Budget to establish a National Framework on Early Learning and Child Care, beginning in 2017-2018.
We are launching a campaign to demonstrate the great need for a full child care system, so that when the Federal Government goes to negotiate with the provinces, our voices have been heard.
National Office is going to be lobbying at the national level to Ministers, MPs and with like-minded NGOs to have our position heard. But we need CLUBS to take action and convince their local representative as well!

Sexual Assault on Campus: Project
CFUW supports the right for women to learn in safe environments, free from violence and fear, and where they have access to the resources they need. It has become clear that the policies and response mechanisms at many Canadian post-secondary institutions are not in place to ensure this. In the coming months we will be launching a national project on sexual assault on campus as part of our National Initiative on Violence against Women. We will be engaging CFUW clubs across Canada to conduct research and advocate for universal standards on sexual assault policy.
As a first step, we have gathered resources for clubs to use to educate themselves on the topic:
University Affairs: Ending Sexual Violence on Campus
CBC News: Schools reporting zero sexual assault on campus not reflecting reality, critics, students say
TIME Magazine: Campus Sexual Assault
MacLean’s : Why don’t Canadian universities want to talk about sexual assault?
We have gratefully accepted the support of Lara Iemma, a young professional in Toronto who will be researching and writing on the topic of sexual assault on campus. She has written this article to give an overview of the problem on university campuses.

CFUW believes that women working together can continue to build a strong national organization to ensure that all girls and women have equal opportunities and equal access to quality education within a peaceful and secure environment where their human rights are respected. Our vision includes a world where poverty is reduced, discrimination eliminated, where there are equal opportunities for leadership, employment, income, education, careers and the ability to maximize potential.
