CFUW National 100th Anniversary Plans

CFUW National has a number of plans underway for the 100th Anniversary in 2019:

1. The History Project

Work on collecting the histories of all the past presidents has been underway for the past two years. These histories are now being collected and assembled into a series of documents that can be used in a number of ways: available on a disk, printed as a series on the website. There will be a meeting of the History Committee at this year's AGM to determine the next steps.

2. The Historic Plaque

Parks Canada Agency, Government of Canada will issue a plaque acknowledging the 100th anniversary of CFUW. The exact placement of the plaque is under discussion.

3. The 100th Anniversary Scholarship Project

The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) has supported women's studies since its founding in 1919.  To celebrate the CFUW's 100th Anniversary, CFUW Clubs, members and Regional Councils are invited to join the national effort to provide an additional $100,000 in scholarships and awards in 2019.

We are off to a great start!  While 2019 may seem a long way off, Clubs and Councils across the country are already planning their participation in the 100th Anniversary Scholarship Project.

·  CFUW Milton and District will offer an additional local scholarship in 2019

·  CFUW Kelowna has two projects - a new Trades/Non-Academic Bursary at Okanagan College, and a donation to the CFUW Charitable Trust to support an additional Anniversary Fellowship

·  CFUW Mississauga and CFUW Sudbury will be donating funds to the CFUW Charitable Trust which will be used for additional national fellowships in our anniversary year.

·  The Quebec Regional Assembly is making a donation to the Charitable Trust

4. The 100 CFUW Honorees (National)

There will be 100 awards given throughout Canada for women who are members of CFUW and who have made a contribution within the aims and objectives of CFUW (but not necessarily limited to CFUW). They will be women who have made a distinct and describable difference.

This will be initiated at local level but determined by a national committee of 5 members, one from each CFUW region.

5. CFUW 100th Anniversary Special Acknowledgement Awards (Local)

CFUW Clubs will be invited to participate by acknowledging their own members through these awards. The awards will be used in any of the following ways:

·  Recipients who have made significant contributions locally, nationally and internationally in accordance with goals and objectives of CFUW.

·  Recipients must have made extended efforts in preserving the integrity of their club over a period of years.

·  Recipients must have been involved in developing solutions for community changes.

6. CFUW Leadership Foundation

This is very much in the exploratory stages but it is thought that establishing a stand-alone foundation where the purpose would be education and training and research in women's leadership and public policy would allow CFUW to undertake some new and exciting opportunities. It could provide funding to Clubs that are undertaking community development and outreach activities in their communities. It would help build capacity for ensuring the voices of women continue to be heard across the country - and are strong voices. External funding would be sought to establish such a foundation.

This foundation would allow CFUW to expand its activities, and provide additional benefits to membership in the organization by providing more formalized training and learning opportunities. In doing so, it would help CFUW retain and grow our membership. At the same time we would be increasing our influence in communities across Canada by developing our members' leadership skills, and ability to engage with decision makers and the public on women's rights issues.

7. The Stamp

We have prepared an application for a CFUW 100th anniversary stamp and submitted it to Canada Post. However, we were informed that we were a bit too enthusiastic - they only accept applications two years before a potential anniversary. The application is ready and will be resubmitted at the appropriate time.

Please let us know if you have any other suggestions.
